Uncle Milton Deep Sea Jellyfish Review

This product works great and is lovely to look at. You have to soak the jellyfish first in warm water. Fill the tank with water, put the jellyfish in, I used a pencil to pick them up and put them in. Turn on the pump, let it cycle till all the air bubbles released. Let the jellyfish soak in the water in the tank for half a day. Then while barely lifting the lid, don't take the lid all the way off, use the pencil end to turn the jellyfish over to release the air bubbles. They should then sink to the bottom that way you know they are completely soaked. Add a little bit of dish soap. Turn it on and it should work beautifully with all the jellyfish swimming around in different directions. Motor is somewhat loud though. Fantastic product looks very realistic.

DUD Do Not Buy - Amy Morrison - Kentucky
Bought this for my five year old. Should have paid closer attention to the reviews. It took over 5 days for the jellyfish to sink when soaking. Could not get the pump primed at all. Tried for hours. The next day worked with it again and still could not get the thing to work. Don't waste your time, money, and patience on this contraption. Not worth even considering.

We couldn't get this to work at all. No English instructions. Tried all the internet posted tips without success. This is definitely a waste of money. Sadly I did not keep the receipt :( since it was bought through a school catalog as a X-mas gift. Don't waste your money.

This product is lovely to look at but, it is a true pain to get it to function properly.
You must prime the pump, you must soak the jellyfish ...and it still may not work. I would simply pass on this one, just too much trouble.

Wish I got robbed the money I used on this toy - M. Gakuria - Lincoln, NE USA
I love anything that deals with the stars, trying to get my nephew to like them and all.. I cant believe NatGeo would even give this toy such a big name and give it a colorful box to go with it. It is a real disappointment from the word go.
The halogen light run on batteries, that is a big no no right there, it doesn't produce enough light and the light is not bright at all making it look like a candle light.
The plastic around it is weak and feels cheap.
The 'cool blue' light is nothing but a disappointment, it doesn't light up nothing and it just look weird.
Bottom line, even for , NatGeo should have considered rethinking about this.
A real big miss for them on this one!
Don't buy, if you do go ahead and say bye to your money..

I can't believe that National Geographic has put their name on this product. It doesn't create lights on the ceiling representing stars, it creates shadows where the stars should be and it doesn't even do that well. On top of that it is made of incredibly low quality cheap plastic and the light burns out within minutes. Don't buy this toy unless you would just like to throw your money away anyway.

We bought this for my grandson who is interested in astronomy. Fortunately, I opened it to put in batteries and check it out before his birthday. The stars are projected as large dull fuzzy black spots on a white background - just the opposite of what they should be. Constellations names are barely legible. This is perhaps the worst educational toy I have ever seen. It will be returned.

Considering how cheap this item is, it works about as well as you could expect for under . I returned it after testing it out, because I was so disappointed at the quality of the projections. While sitting on a nightstand, the projections it made on a standard 8-ft ceiling were less than mediocre. You couldn't even read most of the constellation names, let alone tell what was showing on the ceiling. I didn't like that it used batteries, either. And as the last reviewer stated, I guess it turns out it uses a lot of battery power. The coolest part of the thing was the nightlight, and if you want a nightlight, you're better off buying one for 1/4 of the price.

Very poor quality - Denver Dan - Denver, CO
I concur with the previous reviewer. I purchased the exact same device from another retailer for much more than the price listed here at Amazon. The light is very dim and the lens is cocked to one side slightly away from the point of magnification. It is permanently glued there, just as was previously noted. The single AA battery light is also very dim and the focus wheel slips badly. It is a poor design, coupled with a poor implementation.

I purchased this microscope as a gift for my grandson in another part of the country. When he got it he was extremely dissapointed. The focus mechanism did not work at all. A rubber wheel pushes the barrel of the microsope up and down. The barrel didn't move at all. It was so loose that even after putting 7 layers of transparent tape on the barrel it was still loose. There is a light, but the lens, which was glued in place, was cockeyed. It did not put any light whatsoever on the object being viewed. I do not recommend this microsope at any price.

Giant Ant Farm Review

This was a great find. The only problem we had with it is that it came put together wrong and we almost broke it trying to figure out what was wrong with it. So it did not stay together well once we figured it out. The two big pieces were not mixed. One was up the other was down. Took us a long time to realize that. But all in all a great farm, its big and lots of fun!

Ant farms are sadistic . . . - Margot Poznanski -
Basically, this is a little ant gas chamber. The ants cannot possibly survive no matter how nicely you treat them. Mold forms on the food you have fed them and slowly they all die off. They make some interesting tunnels for a while and then they die. This is not an ant colony because there are only worker ants and if you know anything about ants at all, they have no purpose without their queen.

So basically, I just felt sorry for the ants, even though it is pretty hard to feel sorry for ants. My son and daughter (including the offspring who had begged and pleaded to get it) lost interest in it even before the ants all died. I put it in the garage and no one has said a word about "where is the ant farm?"

Maybe this sounds a little harsh, but it's honest. Save your money for nature camp. Thanks.

I think the ant farm is great, but the ants do not live long. It has been three weeks since I received the ants and I have one left. I only gave them bottled water this time, and it did not help. The instruction book inside the ant farm box states they live a few months. When I talked to someone from Uncle Milton, they said 3 - 4 weeks. That is not a long time.

A Total Rip-off! - Animal Lover -
I was so excited when I got this product, so I sent off for the ants. I waited a very long time for the ants, and when they finally arrived, over half of them were dead. There were only less than 15 still alive, most of which died in the first few days. Only about four ants lived for the first week. They barely made any tunnels in the two weeks that they lived. When I was doing some research on ants, I found out that ant colonies can't survive without a queen. You can't order a queen for this ant farm, so the ants die! It is made just to fail and for you to waste your money. If you love animals and don't want to cause suffering to them, please don't buy this product.

Cool idea but many difficulties! - ivplay - Fargo, ND United States
We purchased this for my son last Christmas to upgrade from his simple one gallon Beta tank which we had great success with. It's a cool idea, but we've been disappointed with it and will likely replace it before too long.

The problems we've had:
*Batteries are difficult to change and seem to run down quickly even though we try not to leave the lights on much.

*Even with fresh batteries, the lights are not very bright.

*The air bubblers have fouled over quickly

*The sharks no longer float although they've been thoroughly scrubbed to make sure they have no growth on them.

*And last but not least, we cannot keep fish alive. We have two large tanks in the house as well as two other beta tanks. We are familiar with fish. We've tried Bettas, molly's, and guppies.

My seven year old son thought this fish tank was the coolest thing he had ever seen. And it really was, with the awesome coral formations and various undersea creatures, and of course the floating sharks. And it lights up, which makes it even cooler. BUT, when we put water in it, it leaked all over the counter. So, with heavy heart, I packed it up and sent it back. I didn't dare to order a replacement tank, thinking it might do the same thing. Instead, we went to the pet store, and spent many more dollars for a 10 gallon tank, light, filter, heater, coral reef decorations, SCUBA diver, plastic plants, gravel. . . . Oh, and of course, the fish, still a work in progress.

Uncle Milton Illuminated Ant Farm Gel Colony Review

Very neat at first, but after a few months when all the ants die (which I knew would happen so I'm not upset about that), they all died on the bottom of the container under the gel. I didn't know how to get them out, so I just threw the whole thing out.
I wish the bottom unsnapped so I could clean it out and get more ants.

Indiana Jones Crystal Skull Adventure Projector Review

Yes, that would be the Uncle Milton of ant farm fame. I wonder what an "Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" ant farm would be like? ;-)

Hard translucent blue plastic skull measures 9-1/2 inches long, 4-1/2 inches high, 4 inches wide. Battery-operated light mechanism (3 "C" batteries) creates a surprisingly bright beam.

Box art includes full LucasFilm Ltd. markings in addition to the Uncle Milton logo. The base of the skull also bears both LFL and Uncle Milton trademark and copyright information.

The lower jaw is hinged and movable.

Set includes Skull Projector, set of 3 8-frame cardboard transparency strips, and an audio CD featuring narration to accompany the slides. The slide transparencies appear to be 16mm size film stills. Batteries not included.

As I said above, the light is surprisingly bright, in that, for example, if you point it straight at your eye (not recommended), you'll wish you hadn't. Once the slide strips are inserted, however, unless the room is absolutely pitch dark, you won't be able to see much. Even the slightest amount of ambient light washes out the images, most of which consist of scenes from the various "Indiana Jones" franchise films. Additionally, the images are small. While the 16mm film frames could, in theory, be projected quite large with a high level of detail, the fixed-focus lens on this projector, in addition to the limited brightness, require keeping the projector quite close to the screen or wall, resulting in a small image, perhaps little more than 12-inches (30 cm) in height.

An included audio CD, meant to synchronize with the slides, features a narration by a Harrison Ford sound-alike actor, who does quite a good job. I have listened to the CD in my car stereo a few times; it's rather entertaining on its own, without the slides. Slide transitions are signaled by a whip-crack sound effect; changing the slide strips is indicated by an airplane engine sound.

I suspect most kids would grow tired of watching the 24 small, dim slides rather quickly; but the skull itself is pretty cool. I actually removed the projector mechanism from the projector skull I purchased and installed a low-wattage light bulb, creating a spooky glowing Crystal Skull night light. The surprising amount of detail molded into the projector makes this a great crystal skull prop (about 1/2 scale, I would estimate, compared to the on-screen skull) for Indy film fans.

Vintage Ant Farm - 50th Anniversary Review

We received this ant farm as a Christmas gift from grandmom and have had a wonderful time watching the ants make their tunnels. The ants did take a long time to arrive, but I think it was probably because it was still cold in many parts of the country when we ordered them. (It would have been nice if they could have at least sent a confirmation post card letting us know why there was a delay.) The good news - all the ants were alive and active and started tunneling the first night we had them. I have 2 girls age 3 and 5 and they were fascinated with this . . . it's been about a month now and they are losing interest, but they were very in to them for the first 2+ weeks.

I had an Uncle Milton's Ant Farm in college, and thought it was terrific. I ordered this for my stepson for Christmas, knowing that he would get a kick out of it. The first thing you need to realize is that this edition is about half the size of the normal one. It does have the size in the specifications, but I still didn't realize this until I got it.

I ordered the ants, and 3 months later they have not arrived. I was low on checks so I paid for the shipping charge with a money order. I wish I had used a check so that I would know if/when they cashed it. All I know is 3 months have gone by without a single word from them. My youngest son broke the farm last night. I'm in a dilemma because I don't want to waste any more money on this product, but I sure don't want to open up the mailbox to a vial of ants if I don't have the farm....

What a joke... - Elizabeth -
We bought the habitat in March, ordered 2 tadpoles in April, waited months for them to arrive. One died within a few days and they sent us a new one. Waited, waited, waited, waited. Followed directions EXACTLY. About 3 months later, the other original one died. Another 2 months, the replacement died. Now we are 6 months out, never having seen a frog. Uncle Milton has taken their phone number off their website. I sent an e-mail to them and received an automatic reply saying someone would contact me within 2-3 days. A week later I sent it again. A month later I sent another e-mail, now the autoresponse says 5-7 day. I'm still waiting and my child very disappointed. Do NOT buy this product. Waste of money and lots of time.

Both tadpoles DEAD and NEVER turned in to FROGS!! SO disappointing!!!! - G. Fasching - Oregon
Wow, what a terrible terrible product! The wait to receive the frogs wasn't too bad - about 10 weeks, but we had them for three months and NOTHING happened! Changed the water & fed as directed but they stayed tadpoles. Then one started swimming upside down and doing twirlies so we figured he was probably a goner. He died two days later. Our other tadpole survived about one more week and died after doing the crazy twirlies too. My daughter is REALLY disappointed and we do not recommend this to anyone!
As someone else stated, if I could give it 0 stars, I would!

I guess we are off to buy some fish......

I purchased this product in the store to use in my classroom. When I opened the box, I was disappointed in how flimsy the habitat was. The plastic is very thin and it doesn't weigh much, so while it is easily moved, it can also be easily knocked over. Each time we cleaned the habitat we were worried about it falling apart. The tadpoles that came lasted 1 month and then died. In that time barely any change happened. We replaced them with tadpoles from a pond and they developed much quicker. If you do buy this habitat, I would definitely get your own tadpoles from somewhere else. The company is VERY hard to get in touch with and when I finally did, they weren't very friendly or helpful. I would not purchase this item again.

First of all, we purchased this toy from a store that had a much higher price than Amazon, so that makes the experience more painful. Upon opening the habitat we discovered it is made of bendy, flimsy plastic, like the kind many toys come packaged in. Then, we ordered the tadpoles--another on top of the purchase price!!--7 weeks before my daughter's 6th birthday. 12 weeks later the tadpoles finally arrived. We live in the midwest and apparently it is nearly always too hot or too cold to ship tadpoles to us. Once they arrived, we were DILIGENT about following the directions. They seemed to make it clear these critters were specific in their needs and we had waited sooooo long...2 weeks later the first one died. 2 week after that, the 2nd one "croaked", and I wish I meant literally. NOTHING fun happened, no legs, and the water was almost always so cloudy from their food that you could barely see the tadpoles. This toy was such a bust. A complete waste of time and money, tho it seemed like it was going to be a really neat, educational experience.

Star Wars Science - Force Trainer Review

I enjoy collecting Star Wars and Star Trek stuff. By far, this is the coolest thing I own...even though, my mom thinks I look like a two year old in it. I do feel younger, that is for sure. I doubt this really works like they say it does, but I enjoy the item tremensly. And for me, it is entertainment. Does it really run off beta waves? The debate is definitely out there. I do know that when I take the headset off; it quits working completely. If it were on a timer, then the ball should still float while the headset is off. So, something is doing it. Hopefully, some one will get up the nerve to dismantle one,and show us how its done. Cause I'd like to know.

great as a toy, but its more than that.... - Russell -
My four year old and I both love the Force Trainer. He earns a bite of chocolate if he can hold the ball up for about 10 seconds, and he's getting pretty good at it. I also think it helps his attention span for other things. I enjoy it for similar reasons, it helps me re-train my focus when I'm getting a bit crazed. It's also a great party item -- everyone wants to try it.

My only minor beef is that the explanations of the different levels isn't sufficient, nor is the science behind it. What is being measured, alpha, delta waves, or what?

It is never too early to start Jedi training, all tots need to know the power of the force. I have no idea how this works but I have been told it does. There are 15 levels going from Padawan to Jedi Knight. The wireless headset somehow tracks the brain wave to move the ball up and down in the tube. Comes with voices from Star Wars characters to make it realistic! I am so happy the younger generations are getting into Star Wars. We are definitely keeping the legacy going at our house, I am so proud my daughter said she wants a Princess Leia birthday party!

I got this as a biofeedback machine, thinking it would be nice to learn how to control brainwaves. You can do that with this technology. I couldn't figure out how the thing was supposed to operate. It took the tech support lady about 15 minutes of frustration to get it right. The thing is not straight forward. There are basically two modes: free operation, and doing the things Yoda tells you to do in sequence. You can't just push a button or switch to select modes. You have to push buttons and hold for somewhat random lengths of time. You can't tell when you've selected a particular mode, you just have to wait and see. It's really annoying. The tech support lady eventually deduced that 7 seconds was the proper length of time I need to hold down the button to make one selection, rather than the 5 seconds described vaguely in the manual.

Did I mention Yoda? His voice narrates the thing for you. He's always talking at you, encouraging you, and repeating cliches from the movie. Once again, it's really annoying. If only the thing had a Shut Yoda Up button.

I learned how to control the height of the ball in the tube by varying my state of mental concentration. That was nice. I could learn to be a lot better at it, and would like to do that. However the thing has sat unused now for months, because I just never feel like listening to Yoda's annoying blabbering. Don't get me wrong, I like Yoda in the movies. He's a great character, but who wants to listen to the same dozen recordings of his voice repeated ad nauseam while they're trying to learn mental control?

I really can't imagine why the engineers didn't put simple switches on this thing to control modes and levels, instead of the difficult and imprecise system they ended up with. I do know why they thought Yoda would be a good idea. Personally I think they got that one wrong too. But even if Yoda might make the thing more attractive to some kids, I think a simple Yoda-Off switch would have made the thing a whole lot more usable for most people.

I would have given the thing a 5, if they'd put simple control switches on it, and included some way to turn Yoda off.

Really a huge waste of Money. - A. Soundhouse Recording LLC - Seattle, WA USA
This is really a waste of money. You can not get it focus on anything, and even the slightest bump to the telescope - such as your adult eye touching the eye piece - will shift the direction of the telescope enough to where you can't see what you were just looking at. EXAMPLE: As a parent you try and focus on the MOON. You finally get it just right (a frustrating experience to say the least) - and by just removing your eye from the eye piece -- you have now shifted the angle and lost the focus - and then when your child puts their eve up the the piece - they are looking at black sky. Binoculars would have been a much better purchase. I'd feel too guilty to even try and sell this through Craigslist, e-bay or even at a Garage Sale. This is going to good will - and I bet the next stop for it from there is a landfill. Waste of time, money and bad for the environment - as it is just more garbage. Uncle Milton should be ashamed. Totally disappointing.

I am doing a unit on the solar system with my child care kids right now. I hung these from the ceiling fan in the classroom. The kids think it's super cool to watch the planets "orbit" the sun (light) when I turn the fan on the low setting. It comes with Pluto, but I just didn't hang that one up since it's not considered one of the planets anymore.

I don't think these would be very durable if they were played with by little ones, but they're great for hanging up to look at and learn about the planets.

Some people have complained about the lack of a sun in the set. I'm pretty sure, since these are specifically made to be hung from the ceiling, you are supposed to use the light to represent the sun.

These are wonderful! Different size planets, and they glow in the dark. My son loves these on his ceiling! Comes with everything you need right in the box! No looking for string or tacks...it's all there! Makes his room look great!!

These planets light up in the dark and came with a pen light that you can make them glow if you have insufficient light. My husband and I had to sort through them to figure out what planets were which ones so it might have been nice to have had them labeled underneath their packaging. Also, the fishing line is somewhat difficult to loop for hanging. Other than that, we love the planets that hang from a star from the ceiling.

Overall, the planets are very bright and the scale of each seems to be accurate. Jupiter is about the size of a large grapefruit, Uranus and Neptune the size of oranges, Earth a bit smaller than a tennis ball, and Pluto (no longer considered a planet by most, but hey) is a little smaller than a ping pong ball.

The quality of the product, however, is that of plastic Easter eggs and the 3 largest planets assemble as such...snap both pieces together and voila, instant planet. The product's light weight makes for easy hanging, so I am taking the good with the bad. I am satisfied and think the planets will hang nicely from the ceiling with some distance between them and my eyes. (FYI-I purchased an 8 inch golden paper lantern to act as the sun since the kit only contains the planets.) Overall, a decent product for a great price.

I ordered three of these for my grandsons. I purchased new batteries
and they were so excited to try them out. We could not get them to work at all! I would have sent them back, but the packaging had been thrown away and I figured I wouldn't have a chance. Now they are just sitting there waiting for me to throw them out. Never again.

The battery conductor is flimsy and never conducts. So you try to lift and that's when it breaks rendering it completely useless. It's a total plastic junk. Not to disappoint my kids, I somehow managed to get it work but they lost interest immediately.
