Uncle Milton Uncle Milton Giant Ant Farm Review

I gave this ant farm to my husband for part of his Christmas. It also included a 52" Panasonic flat screen TV. Christmas afternoon, the TV sat in the box, but the ant farm was up and running with him sitting in front of it with a magnifying glass!!

I had ordered the ants ahead of time because this is not our first "ant rodeo," so if you're thinking about ordering one, order your ants so they'll arrive about the same time! Then you're ready to go.

This is a big ant farm and plenty big for anyone. Realize that the ants will only live for a couple of months, max, without a queen. You don't want a queen, though, because they lay hundreds of eggs a day and the farm would burst at the seams. Plus, they won't mail queens, so get over it. Just enjoy your ants and order some more when they finally poop out. They will work 24/7 and you'll enjoy their quirky tunneling decisions.

I'd like to have a gel farm but I can only find tiny ones.

Enjoy!!!

Major Waste of Money and Time - Starr -
I would never recommend a Milton ant farm to anyone. Believing the hype on the box, I bought two gel farms. One for my primary class and one for my own children at home. First of all, what they DON'T tell you on the package is that they only ship to interior/northern states and Canada between April and September. If you recall, the school year ends in June. So for many teachers this won't work...but I didn't know that when I spent my money. But wait..it gets worse.

We ordered ants in March so they'd be shipped in April. They were to be sent express, but could take, we were told, 'up to' 3 weeks. 3 weeks after they were supposedly shipped, we had no ants. We called. They gave us a tracking number. A week later 2 tubes of ants came. All but a few were dead. Small surprise. They starved. We also noticed that Milton was not the shipper. "Whoever They Were Toy Store' paid under to ship the ants and we had paid CA for EXPRESS! Of the ones we got, none would tunnel. We even had a retired high school teacher try to help. He had a traditional sand farm when he was teaching, that he built himself and had been doing farms for years. No matter what he and I tried, the ants hated the gel. They just kept dying and the live ones stacked up the bodies of the dead until they were all dead. It was pitiful to watch the last one, alone.

We called Milton and told them about the shipping method and dead ants. 'They' sent more ants. Same thing. Shipment took more than 3 weeks, sent snail mail again. Dead ants. By this time it was mid June. School was almost over. We called Milton again. They said 'oops sorry - no more we can do - we're not sending more ants'. Then they claimed they don't actually 'ship' the ants direct. They have 'agents' that do it. They told us we'd have to argue with the agent that actually shipped the ants. We got the number and called the shipper. GET THIS. They said that the first we paid was for Milton to send the ants to the agent. The remaining was for the snail mail to us. The agent was going to 'lose money' if they paid for a better method. (I guess our money didn't matter.)
Their response to our situation? 'Sorry, you'll have to talk to Milton'.

So, we got the royal run-around. We called Milton again. Their solution? Return the ant kits to the retailer we bought them from. We got them from ToysRUS, who said...."Sorry, you've used the kits. No refund."
We call Milton back. They say..."Ok, we'll refund your money. BUT you have to send the kits to us.........registered and insured mail, your cost."

Punch line time.... The shipping was more than we paid for the farms. We still have them. Useless things.

Oh yes, and I forgot. The second punch line...the ants die after about 6-8 weeks anyway, even if you get live, healthy ants, so...you need to keep paying for more ants. The same ants that most states and all provinces can only get between April 1 and August 31.
Your kids get to watch the ants die, over and over again...for piles of your money. Cool, eh? NOT

Here's a better idea, google ant farms at antcam. We finally found these guys. They build regular old farms that don't collapse or they give you plans to do your own. The ants are happy. They don't die needlessly and you can go get your own ants in your backyard.
(HEY why didn't Milton tell us this in the first place?? Er.)

It's a money grab. Nothing more. Cruel to the ants and expensive for the buyer. Run away from this one, especially if you live in an interior or nothern state and especially if you live in Canada.
Shame on you Uncle Milton.

Ants only live a short time - C. Chapman - Madison, WI
I received my ants and half were dead. I called and they said they send plenty to make up for the dead ones. I still had 10. Within nine days those were dead. I called and they said not ot give them tap water. That was not in their instruction booklet. They are sending me new ants, and I will try bottled water this time.

fun with ants - Cheryl L. Fox - Florida
My little granddaughters love watching the ants every day. I am so glad I gave this toy to them, just like I gave one to their dad when he was a boy. He is now an entomologist.

Uncle Milton Deluxe Aquasaurs Habitat Review

My children enjoyed watching the aquasaur grow and change everyday. It was easy to care for and very low maintenance. Not all that it is cracked up to be. - Jennifer Floyd -
Aquasaurs are very peculiar, finicky creatures. The instructions are very specific and if they are not followed exactly, they will not hatch. I'm sure they are cool when they do. You have to use distilled/deionized water. You cannot use treated water like you do for a fish tank. You have to keep the water temperature between 72 - 80 degrees. (Which in the winter is hard to do & it doesn't come with a light.) A lamp is recommended to keep the tank warm, but CFL's do not give off heat, so you have to make sure and get incandesant light bulbs. I did the first 1/2 of the eggs and 1 baby was found, but he didn't survive. I tried the 2nd half and not a single one hatched. Honestly, my boys had more fun watching the sea monkeys, which are cheaper, faster, easier and definately more hearty.

Very Disappointed - P. Santos - Stockbridge, MA
This was a gift for my 5 1/2 year old son. In addition to purchsing the item itself, we needed to buy special spring water as well as a heater in order to maintain the water temperature. After securing those two items we put the eggs in and have never had a sinle one hatch. We cleaned it out and started over again and still no fish. Biggest waste of money not to say very very disappointing for my son!

my daughter LOVED IT and so did I - Gardenut - Cincinnati, Ohio
The delux Aquasaurus is more sturdy than the other option and the little creatures are so interesting. My daughter loved it and so did the adults. It is a great educational toy and I would suggest it to anyone.

Butterfly Jungle Review

My 9 year old got this for Christmas last year and really enjoyed it. I have to admit, that although we followed the directions on the package, our caterpillars died. But when we called the company in order to try and buy some more, they were very understanding and sent us a second set of caterpillars free of charge. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed the butterfly garden and actually had a birthday yesterday and has not received the frog planet. We will see if she enjoys that one as much!

Butterfly Jungle Overview

One of nature's most amazing transformations happens in a 3D jungle setting. Watch as live caterpillars build dangling cocoons, and emerge as beautiful Painted Lady butterflies you can release in the backyard. Includes a booklet full of butterfly facts, coupon for 3-5 live caterpillars and special food. Jungle measures 12" tall with a 12" diameter. There is a nominal fee for shipment of the caterpillars.

Educational but a little frustrating... - -
My daughter got this for Christmas last year, so we waited until the warm weather and sent for the caterpillars. They arrived and we followed the directions, but they all soon died. I called the company and they were very nice and sent out another shipment of caterpillars. One died, but three formed chrysalides. Both of my kids (ages 7 and nearly 3) found it fascinating to watch them emerge into beautiful butterflies. (So did my husband and I!) However, of the three, only one was ultimately able to fly.

Overall, my daughter enjoyed the experience, but I think she was a little let down. She wanted to see butterflies flying about, and instead she got a hard lesson in the delicate balance of nature.

Also, the cardboard inserts that form the 'jungle' warped when they became wet, which was unavoidable when the butterflies emerge and when they had to be fed. I would suggest the butterfly set that comes with the tall net that I think hangs from the ceiling. It comes with more caterpillars and is more roomy.

caterpillars died! - -
My 8 year old daughter bought this with her own birthday money and was very excited at the idea of watching caterpillars grow into butterflies! After waiting over a month to recieve the caterpillars by mail we followed the instructions carefully (don't touch the caterpillars or open the container unitl they form cocoon) all of the caterpillars died! My daughter was very sad!

Star Wars Science - Optical Command Unit Review

My Son received this toy as a birthday present and it has been a hit! I disagree with some of the criticisms that have been posted.

-The binoculars do require assembly, but it was easily done and allowed for great father-son time. My son got the pieces ready while dad assembled. They were able to assemble it all within 10-15 minutes.

The Pen-Light works really well, and you have to use the magnifying piece to get the pictures to view. If you use the magnifying piece you can clearly make out the projection slides from a good distance. Without the magnifying piece, it's just a blur, but I don't think that's how you're suppose to use it.

It's probably not terribly educational, but it's functional enough for my 5 year old. He uses it to birdwatch in our garden and people watching from the car. Good fun for him.

Taking a little time to familiarize yourself with the toy and how it really works makes this toy well worth it.

Star Wars Science - Optical Command Unit Feature

  • Build, magnify, and project.
  • Easy to assemble with snap-together parts
  • Use magnifier to view small specimens
  • Simulated holographic image projector
  • View small objects through real binoculars

Star Wars Science - Optical Command Unit Overview

Hard to put together. - Susanne B. Verrill - Matthews, NC USA
Bought this for my 7 yr old's birthday. He tried to put it together and it was way too advanced for him, even though he's a master at legos and following those directions. It was almost too advance for me to put together and I come from a family of engineers. Once it was together, the pieces don't operate quite as smoothly as they should b/c the pieces don't fit together well. My 7 yr old does enjoy playing with it, but not as much as he would if it worked better. It's something that he picks up just occasionally.

techmanb - S. Andrew Baker III - Williamsport, PA USA
I first saw this toy at the Science and Industry Museum in Chicago. My son is an avid Star Wars fan, and I thought that this would be a good compromise for a Christmas gift.

While the concept of the device is a good one, its design and construction leave much to be desired.

-First of all, it was like putting a model together. It came in the same type of plastic that snap-tite model kits do, only it did not go together as well as they do

-Then there is the "optics". Supposedly, you can slide a bar forward and backward to adjust the range or clarity of site through the lenses. The plastic that holds the lenses onto the adjusting bar is extremely thin, and flexes very easily, which means that the lenses stick and don't move very well.

-The other issue is the light. While the pen-light itself works great (after all, how hard is it to make a flashlight?), the photo projection slides are lousy. You have to literally have the front of the projector against a wall to even get an idea of what is on the slide.

For the price that they charge for this, I would have been better off to get a cheap pair of binoculars and flashlight at a supercenter, then decorating them a little. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement.

Decent Star Wars Accessory (If you get it on sale) - Snoochy - An Island in Washington
I purchased this for a nephew who is a Star Wars fanatic (even though only nine years old). I purchased on Amazon at a heavily discounted price.

My nephew loved it and is not (at least yet) too annoyed that he can only project a few images. It's a great prop to complete his costuming as he has numerous other accessories and props acquired over the past few years.

It was fun to put together but doesn't strike me as much of an educational toy for someone his age. I'm sure it could be educational if you wanted to use it that way...but it's more of a nice toy or prop.

Durability of the main body of the toy is pretty good, but the little hinged projector piece will probably break off at some point. Has not yet though...

I already had the 3-D machine with the solar system slide show/CD in it and loved it. While some of the images were not totally wonderful, the idea was really cool and the CD tour was really educational for my students. However, the 3-D under the sea tour was very disappointing. The tour is not nearly as engaging and none of the pictures appeared to be 3-dimensional. I probably will use the CD and find my own pictures to project to go along with it.

Mini Hydroponic Greenhouse Review

I bought the Hydro Greenhouse 2 offline at Toys r Us, as a gift for my girlfriend. I was rather disappointed when I opened it because its incubator case looked nothing like that shown on the box. It was made of flimsy soft plastic which couldn't really hold on to its place, and really made the greenhouse aesthestically less appealing.

However, it really worked like it said it would. Its instruction manual had a list of vegetables, herbs or flowers that you could grow (which wasn't mentioned elsewhere), so I'm not sure if other kinds of plants would work. I planted two types of seeds (not included in package) - Livingstone Daisy (which was not on the list) and Marigold. Within 3 days, my marigold seeds sprouted, although the seed packet said that it would take 7 days. Whether this was due to the excellent conditions of hydroponics is unclear. My daisies have yet to sprout, though it's only 5 days and the seed packet said it would take 2 weeks.

Overall this is pretty cool. You don't have to water them daily, or even take care of them, the water reservoir does the job for you, and you only have to refill it once a week. You also won't have to worry about weeds or bugs since you can keep it indoors and it's covered up (I had a fly trying to build a next though, thankfully it was too fat to squeeze in the holes!) There's also a year's supply of Nutrients to mix with the water. I wonder if normal fertilizers would work as well, since my area doesn't have refills available.

I'll recommend this if you like growing plants but don't like the hassle that comes with it. Highly convenient and delightful to watch your seedlings grow each day! A perfect product if the manufacturers could improve on its incubator casing to make it more sophisticated.

Mini Hydroponic Greenhouse Feature

  • The Future? Hydroponics! Forget "Plastics. You missed that. There's still time for hydroponics, however.

Worked Perfect - Seth C. Rodriguez -
My mom just got one of these, and growing her own herbs inside with checking on it only once a week has made it really easy. It comes with food, growing medium and scoop. Making the water food is so simple.

Hydroponic Greenhouse - Donald - Oklahoma, USA
I read the reviews before I bought this product...and it will come apart but I taped it and it works great. I think sometimes people expect to much out of things. But I am very happy and I am going to purchase a bigger one to use in a greenhouse.

nice greenhouse, but doesnt look like the picture - L. Scott - Orange County, CA
this is a fun little toy. i attempted to grow mint in it (it was on the list of plants to grow which came with the kit) and it worked well. I have currently ordered a refill package (it comes with new growing medium, nutrients, and a transfer strip) and it only costs off the Uncle Milton website. my only complaint with it however is that it doesnt not look like the picture. the top of the greenhouse is flimsy and is hard to get on and if you barely bump it, it goes flying off. it looks more like a toy than a nice green house.

Laser Star Review

This was just what I was looking for. I wanted something like this for my 18 year-old daughter's room. I ordered a couple of different projectors to compare which one I liked best and this one won by far! When I first turned it on in a dark room, I went Wow! and then grabbed my husband to see if he felt the same. He did. I liked it so much I bought another one for my 12 year-old daughter. Now it's the first thing they show their friends.

Laser Star Feature

  • Moving Sky-Show Extraordinaire This staggeringly vivid night-sky projector features green, laser-beamed moving stars and cloud cover and, according to Paul (our in-house astro-galactic display maven), "adjustable-intensity nebula.
  • If that means you can lie supine and happily stare at it for a few hours, we agree, particularly if you cue up the Dark Side of the Moon album at the same time. Or skip the Pink Floyd, and use it to lull the children to sleep.
  • Not an astronomically accurate sky, of course, but you're definitely not going to care. The unit is approx 11" tall on a 9-1/2" x 8-3/8" oval base and plugs in via a wall adapter.
  • The manufacturer suggests a maximum 4-hour duty cycle, white or light walls and a very dark room. Has mounting slots on the base.

Laser Star Overview

With this Laser Star kids can wish upon lots of stars when they transform an ordinary bedroom into their own private star-filled universe. Two built-in precision glass lenses, plus a green laser and holographic technology create thousands of stars and an amazing light show. The coolest most amazing light shows you will see anywhere. Laser Star creates thousand of stars with or without cloud formations. AC adapter is included. Simple to use, just plug it in. It includes a built-in key-hole slot for optional wall mounting and it measures 3.75" x 11" x 8.5".

Doesn't Last!!! - K. Cullip - JOPPA, MD United States
It simply doesn't last. Cheaply made. Would be okay for five or ten bucks, but no more!!!

Great....while it lasted - Samy Adams -
This product was pretty sweet for the short time it worked. After about several hours of use, the motor that rotates the "stars" started making a really loud hum as if it was struggling to keep moving. The lights still work no problem, but unfortunately the whole motion effect is gone. I bought mine from spencers, and I dont know what their return policy.

All in all, this is a neat little toy thats some cool effects to your dorm room, or even a larger room. However the exterior casing seems like its poor quality, and the motor also seems to be pretty cheap.

Not worth a 0

Laser Review - Galina O. Hall -
I just received my 3rd laser. Past 2 failed after 1 to 2 month of use . And this is using it about 4 times a week for about 5 hrs. My strong advise..... find something else. Laser Stars..9 down the drain 2 times now.

Very Cool - D. Blei - Chicago, IL
A friend showed me one of these and it was very cool. I purchased one a few months ago and it still works great. It impresses everyone that comes over. This is probably the best star machine out there for the price. I thought there were supposed to be shooting stars but they dont show up. You can kind of see the pattern of the stars but it is still fun to look at. Would recommend.

MAJOR waste of money and cruel as well - Starr -
I would never recommend a Milton ant farm to anyone.

They don't die..except of normal causes like they would out in their regular hill and you can go get your own ants in your backyard.

Confused Colony - Deena B -
What an exciting toy to get as a gift. My son was so looking forward to this product that he kept asking me if the ants had arrived. When they did finally arrive only 2 of the 20 ants were moving, the rest of them were dead. Within one day, they were all dead. We have gotten a second batch of ants but they are totally confused. They are not lazy they just have no idea what to do with the gel. We have dug the holes as instructed but the ants just group themselves together not moving.

There is a gap on the side of the gel between the gel and the wall. Many of the ants have fallen down the crack. In order to save them we had to lean the farm on it's edge so they could move. I tried giving them water and food - which really did perk them up but only for a little while. There are no tunnels, there is no digging, there are only very confused ants trying to escape. A real disappointment for everyone.

worthless garbage, waste of money - Adam Greenberg -
Its been two months, and the ants never came despite contact with the company. Meanwhile the gel has dried up. Money wasted. Child disappointed

Sad, sad, sad... - Leanne Owens - Houston, Texas
I haven't written a review in years, but felt compelled to add my opinion for this product.

My 5 year-old received this as a birthday present and was very excited. We have captured many bugs and creatures over the years and love watching their fascinating habits. I sent off for ants and was pleasantly surprised that it only took about 2 weeks to receive them. Most were alive and we ended up with about 20. We put them in and waited for the digging to commence. And waited. And waited. We waited over 48 hours and I was truly feeling sorry for the little guys. They were desperate to get out of the wicked contraption and were obviously wearing themselves out trying to climb the unforgiving plastic walls over and over again. The 2 that made it down a pre-made tunnel were obviously stuck and suffocating. I was mortified at the thought that my 5 year-old (and myself as well) had to watch the slow and painfully sad demise of the little guys.

We ended up frantically scouring the stores today to find a replacement habitat for them. We settled on the ant hill version with sand instead of gel. I got them in without a hitch and dug the 2 that were suffocating out of the gel. They seem to be fine now. It took the little guys less than 10 minutes to start doing their "thing." I was SO relieved to see them scurrying about and digging in the sand. Hopefully this will end in an educational and pleasant experience for my daughter.

Avoid this product like the plague. You'll live a more fruitful life without it...

Not really a Telescope - Kelly - St Louis Park, MN United States
My son, who loves anything Star Wars, was greatly disappointed in this. It is not a telescope on which you can view external scenes, but a "kaleidoscope" that shows you pictures of the planets from the Star Wars galaxy. It was quickly discarded on Christmas morning and will be at the Goodwill soon.

You can fix it, but it arrives broke. - Mhidden - Florida
This product came to me and it has all the problems people mentioned.

There is a way with giggling it and pressing down on it to fix the pieces that will linger. It still makes a sound when it moves a little bit and I have no idea how to fix that. I have it in a hot tub room with an ocean projector, the sounds it makes kinda muffles but goes with the noise of it moving. There is no way you can sleep to it right next to you though. I wouldn't want to fall asleep in my hot tub either so it works.

Despite how far away it is, you can still kinda see the lines but again, it's a dolphin and moving with dolphin noise. With my ocean projector I can lock myself away in my little zen room for quite some time.

Pretty cheesy - CaptainHooter - Austin, Tx
It's a cool idea, but its really kinda loud(the plastic pieces of the dolphin). It looks ok in complete darkness, but i wouldnt buy one again.

Looks Nice In a Dark Room but Cheaply Made For The Price - NjFreqTraveler - New Jersey
Bought this as a conversation piece for a home bar; looks nice when the lights are out, but the motion is not very fluid and the product "creaks", a sound noticeable even when the ocean sounds are enabled. Makes this less of a ZEN experience, I suppose, and the price is ridiculous for the quality.

Ok got this on clearance for 5 dollars at target last christmas, gave it to my daughter for christmas. We had a real aquarium for years that we could not keep clean and our fish always die despite good care, well we get this just as a cheap gift. My daughter goes to walmart and buys a goldfish and sucker fish both way to big for this tank. sure death right? WRONG! Almost a year later... Both fish doing well despite her lack of attention and the little tank stays spottless! Who would of known! We did add a little air pump that blows in tiny bubbles, other than that she feeds them and adds a little water now and then. Little care and the fish are doing great! Well worth it!

Picture looks better than the real thing - C. Spence - Virginia Beach, VA
We purchased this for our nephew who loves fish and thought this would be neat to see inside. Well it was a lot different than the pic shows..1. a lot smaller 2. the scope was not very well made so kids could not see well inside. 3. it was cheapy made & looking. The price was not bad considering but lets just say they used it for only a few months and now it is in the garage.

Good Educational Choice Ages 3+ - Mr. Mom - Princeton, NJ
Purchased not one but two of these for Christmas gifts and they were a big hit. One family has twin seven year old boys and the second has a six year old boy and eight year old boy. I checked with the parents beforehand, because they would have to buy the fish, and the idea was well received. Good for a child who needs an increase in responsibilities, but might find the care of a dog too much.
I've yet to see anything else like it. A seabed of stones and an air pump will also need to be purchased seperately if desired, but they are not really needed for gold fish. I have a three year old son and a six year old daughter who will likely receive one too.

Great but leaks - Chrystal D. Pellock - Poulsbo,WA USA
We bought this for our 4 year old. She loved it. Its small and light enough she could help take care of it. It worked wonderful for about an hour then it started leaking from the plastic bottom. I resealed it and it has worked great since. It has a small lense so she can view the fish and its filter is great at keeping it clean. All in all a great kids fish tank.
