Don't let the price deter you!, October 11, 2008

My 5 month old daughter LOVES her Sophie the Giraffe toy! This toy is absolutely wonderful in every way. Sophie is made of soft rubber and makes a pleasant-sounding squeak whenever any part of her body is squeezed, so even a young baby can elicit a reaction from the toy with minimal effort.

I don't know what it is about Sophie, but whenever my daughter plays with her, she gets very vocal and talkative.

I saw another review which referred to this toy as "a glorified dog toy". That reviewer is mistaken, and simply doesn't realize the value of this toy.

- Sophie's body, while soft, has several areas of thicker rubber (the nubs on her head, her ears, and her feet) which are perfect for teething babies to gnaw on for relief.
- Sophie's contrasting colors (spots) are visually stimulating to a baby.
- She is easy to grip given her long, thin neck.
- This toy is made of 100% natural rubber and uses food-grade paint (SAFE!).
- This is a quality baby toy which will last for many years.

I would much rather pay $20 for a safe, engaging toy for my baby, than pay $5 for some piece of junk with lead paint.


My four month old baby loves this giraffe! I tried other teethers that were more standard, and he couldn't stand them. Ring teethers were too huge in all areas to get into his mouth at all, and the plastic was too hard and brittle and seemed to cause him pain.

This Sophie teether is completely different. Some reviewers compared it to a dog toy, and I guess in some ways it's similar, but the rubber is a much finer grade and so much softer than any dog toy I've ever witnessed. It has a pleasant scent and taste as well. It's easy for my son to hold on to and he seems to like looking at it and "coos" to it.

Another reviewer called it a gagging hazard. It's no more a gagging hazard than your child's own fingers. As with any toy, your children should be supervised at play, but I think it's impossible for your child to choke on the Sophie teether. It's large and durable. My son has been using his Sophie for weeks without incident. They've been making Sophie giraffes for generations, the brand has stood the test of time.

Beautifully painted with natural food paint, this toy evokes a feeling of nostalgia, it will make for an adorable keepsake long after your baby outgrows it. Worth the cost; throw away a few bucks on something your child will not use, or spend just a few dollars more for this cherishable giraffe. I intend to purchase more items from Vulli. My baby's gums are soothed and his smile is super happy!




We love, love, love Sophie. My son is four months old and I wish I'd had this for my other children. She isn't hard plastic like other baby toys, or fabric. He never took to those. The minute I gave him his giraffe, she was in his mouth. She really is just perfect - soft, chewable rubber with a nice little squeek. This will be my baby shower gift of choice from now on.


Sophie is a great teether. Her head squeaks when chewed, which is apparently very satisfying, and she has a second squeaker in her tummy. Her legs are the perfect length/size for those "hard to reach spots" on the side gums. My 12 month old little boy has loved Sophie since he was about 5 months old. He doesn't like most teething toys, but he wants her! In fact, we have 2. One lives in his crib, and the other moves around our house. Sophie is very sturdy, so I don't worry about him biting anything off. And she is BPA free, which is comforting. I also like that Sophie has been made exactly the same for generations in France. She has stood the test of time- she is a classic. I can't recommend this toy enough!

My 8 month old has had Sophie for about 3 months now (his first teeth cut through at 4 months); he loves it and it's easy for him to hold. He gets very excited about the squeaky noise he can create himself. For me, it's great piece of mind knowing that it's BPA and PVC-free. I also like that IT'S NOT MADE IN CHINA!!! I'm so tired of teething rings with painted crap on them that I know is going into my child's system. Some other reviewers have negatively commented on the toy's appearance. If you are purchasing this because it is BPA and PVC-free, I find it odd that aesthetics would be so fundamentally important in the 'teething toy category'. We love Sophie so much that we actually purchased some other teethers/toys from the same company and I plan to purchase more as gifts. I really wish I had known about Sophie (and similar products) with my first child.
This toy is definitely pricey, but I find that we take much better care of it and also pay more attention to her whereabouts so as to not lose her. My toddler always asks if we have Sophie for his brother prior to leaving the house; it's like she's part of the family now :)



Ok, to be honest I thought I had lost my mind to order this. I mean, really, isn't it just a teether. I was convinced by the lack of chemicals (BPA-free) . . . especially for something I KNOW the baby will be chewing on.

What I did not expect was it to get rave reviews in my house already. I am currently pregnant and got it for the baby. However, my 2 year old happens to think it is the best thing ever. I have no idea why. Taste?? Texture?? Smell?? I do not know, but he is just entranced with it at 2??

Needless to say, I now have 2 $25 teethers and am happy with both of them. It really is a toy that your baby will love. I have no idea why, but as long as it can entertain and soothe, I am not going to question it. I have already sent 1 to a friend as well (which I guess makes 3 orders), because it really is THAT good.


We purchased this for our baby girl, for her 1st Christmas (2008). What a hit! She instantly loved Sophie the giraffe and we don't leave home without it. It's completely safe for her to chew on and is well made. Both the neck area and body area have squeakers and we love that it's painted with food paint for safety. She loves to hold Sophie either by the neck or the legs. Either area is perfect for a baby's little hands and fingers. Our baby loves to bite Sophie's head and because it's 100% natural rubber, it must feel good on the gums. Sophie is very durable and has held up to multiple beatings (rough play) by our youngest son who is trying to entertain the baby. Sophie also washes very well with a little dish liquid and hot water. I use my index finger to cover the hole on the back while I wash it, so that water doesn't enter inside and create mildew. We all love this toy and I highly recommend it. This would make a fantastic baby gift for any baby.
